$3 Million Dollars

Three million dollars is the total estimated cost to put a roof over the rodeo arena. The town hall meeting Monday brought forth a discussion of other options that could be considered for improvement of the rodeo/event facility.

Three million dollars is the total estimated cost to put a roof over the rodeo arena. The town hall meeting Monday brought forth a discussion of other options that could be considered for improvement of the rodeo/event facility.

An idea was pitched that expanded the idea to building a new facility on the highway teaming with the fair barn and carnival space all in one place. With the location being highly visible to more traffic, it could be an opportunity for other businesses to build nearby, expanding the overall infrastructure of the county.

That said, what other economic or developmental things could be done with $3 million dollars? What are the possibilities could be hatched outside the “box” that would be beneficial to more people.

One conversation asked about a Boys and Girls Club which could give daily activity opportunities to children not able to participate in cost prohibitive events and a place for kids to go after school. What about a covered basketball court or playground in conjunction with a more accessible park?

If economics is a factor, what could $3 million do to bring in new businesses and jobs? What about housing, affordable housing, for workers in the new businesses or in the area?

Calhoun County is in competition with all the surrounding counties for jobs, businesses, events and people. A small industrial park, a new business center incubator, a training center are all ideas that could be possible.

Some of the counties around us have economic boards that plan, promote and encourage businesses to come to their county. These groups help the county to come up with and develop plans for the future and growth to the county. What's the plan for Calhoun County?
