Tax Issues Pass and Fail

Calhoun County has 2,854 registered voters and 1,000 of them voted in the March 5 election.

Two main tax issues on the ballot considered a permanent 0.125% sales and use tax for county parks and a 0.375% bonds and sales and use tax for construction of an arena roof. The permanent tax passed with a count of 501 to 468. The 0.375% tax failed with a count of 460 to 512.

The early voters (529) outnumbered election day voters (471) by 58. The early voting had the 0.375% bonds/tax issue passing with a count of 269 to 241. There are 12 provisional ballots not in the total count and will not change the outcome either way.

The other contested race for Justice of the Peace District 4 saw Jimmy Dale Williams win with a count of 97-41.

In the presidential primary, republicans elected Trump and the democrats elected Biden.
