We never expect bad things to happen, especially to us and never in our town. However, tragedy does happen and it happens, sometimes close to home.
When it happens in Chicago or California, we think nothing of shootings. They happen everyday on the news. When it happens next door, then it's a tragedy we must bear. We feel the pain, we know the hurt, we may even know personally those involved, victim or suspect. It is personal.
When it is close to home we tend to be more concerned and more proactive in responding. The discussion turns to what we might have done in the situation. According to the news conference by the State Police (see video link on page 3) the police, first responders, and individuals reacted promptly in order to save lives. Though at least 4 lives were lost, the tragedy could have been much worse.
Our prayers go out to the families of those lost and to the victims present in the situation. May we all never have to endure such an event.
Tragedy of some sort will more than likely happen again. Whether it be man made or a natural disaster, the situation will arise where our training, our ability to protect ourselves and others, and our resiliency will be tested. Anxiety and stress over situations like this is natural. Our community is strong and our resiliency is extraordinary but may we never take it for granted.
May God protect us and continue to allow us freedom to help and protect those unable to protect themselves.
