Jo's Kitchen

Isn’t it funny how our tastes change over the years? We go from being a picky child that don’t know what tastes good or what’s good for us, to learning how wonderful so many different foods are. I myself, wasn’t the kid to try many vegetables. I was a meat, potato, and fruit kind of girl.

Just like my sweet Darla is now. One vegetable I’ve grown to love, are brussels sprouts. They are like a tiny head of cabbage, I love cabbage. My husband and I enjoy them boiled spicy when we boil shrimp, but I want to share with you my favorite way to cook them. Sweet, savory, tender, and pairs with so many different meats, completing a meal. They are very healthy for you too. Well, before adding all the extra yummy stuff! Ha.

Ingredients:

Fresh brussels sprouts 1 onion, chopped.

6 to 8 pieces of bacon, chopped. Sugar to taste (be generous) Salt and pepper to taste Minced garlic A tiny bit of water 3 pats of butter Start by adding the bacon, one pat of butter, and onion to a skillet. Saute on medium heat until the bacon starts to firm up and the onion is translucent. Add the brussels sprouts and sugar (as much as you like), toss them around until coated in the bacon grease and start to get a brown crust on them. Turn the heat to low, add the remaining butter, seasonings of your choice, and just enough water to partially cover the bottom of the skillet.

Simmer on low with a lid on, until the brussels sprouts get tender to your liking.

Before they get done, add the minced garlic and allow it to simmer for a bit, but not to burn it.

I can eat these by themselves, but try pairing them with hamburger steak or grilled chicken breasts. They are so delicious!

ENJOY!

Tip: Garlic burns easily, do don’t add it until the end.
