A Humble and Contrite Heart

Isaiah 66:2 says, “My hand has made both earth and skies, and they are mine. Yet I will look with pity on the man who has a humble and a contrite heart, who trembles at my word.” God says he looks at the heart. So, what kind of heartishelookingfor? There is no place in God’s sight for pride or arrogance. He is looking for a humble heart.

Jesus came with a humble spirit, so let’s look at how Jesus lived while he was on the earth since he is our example. Jesus was always helping others. Did he ever turn anyone away when they came to him with their sicknesses asking for help? Jesus took time for all of them and healed them of whatever was wrong with them. He set people free from demon spirits that had tormented them for years. Their lives were changed forever. The spirit or spirits that had tormented them for years was suddenly gone and those people had peace. Jesus healed the blind, made the lame to walk, even raised the dead. All these things were done because Jesus saw that people were hurting and He wanted to bring happiness in their lives. Yes happiness, do you think they were happy when they realized they were healed, delivered of demon spirits, etc. Are we following Jesus’s example?

Jesus came as a servant to serve others. To show us that God is looking for people that has humble hearts willing to do whatever is needed for the Kingdom of God. Willing to do and not complain about doing it. We can work all day long every day but if we complain about what we are doing, it is no good. Are we servants of God showing his love to others?

The humble, contrite heart comes from love. The love that Jesus had for man is beyond our comprehension. Someone that would lay his life down so we sinners could live. He laid down everything so sinners could be saved. His heart was full of compassion for mankind, not willing that any should perish but that all could have life and have it more abundantly.

So, as we look at Jesus life, it lets me know that I have not even scratched the surface of being like Jesus. So, do I have a humble, contrite heart? What does Jesus see when he looks at my heart. Does he see anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, resentment, etc. What is in my heart that I need to clean out? Jesus wants my heart to be full of love and compassion and a humble spirit. I have a lot of cleaning up to do, what about you? Are there some things that is keeping you from being all that Jesus wants you to be. Maybe it’s time to let go of some things and work on that humble, contrite heart.
