Sylvia G. Thornton, age 86 of Fordyce died Friday, June 2, 2023 at her home. She was born March 7, 1937 in Hampton, Arkansas. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Fordyce and former owner operator of Captain Cook’s restaurant in Fordyce.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Melvin Childers and Ollie Mae Strickland Childers; husband, Marion Thornton; two brothers, Hollis Childers and Grady Childers; and one sister, Nell Robbins. She is survived by one son, Rev. Jerry Cook of Fordyce; three daughters, Terri (Mark) Lasiter of Jasper, GA, Paula Cook of Fordyce, Connie (Fred) Cox of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Paul Childers of Minden, LA; three grandchildren, Cody Daley of Richmond, VA, Kalie Lasiter of Atlanta, GA, Peyton Lasiter of Philadelphia, PA; and three great grandchildren, Liam, McKenna and Landon Daley.
Our mother’s tenderness will be seen in the memories of her grandkids and her compassion for others will be embraced by those she helped and the friends who witnessed her kindness.
Her sense of humor will be heard as we recall her laughter or visualize her smile. In our thoughts we will hear her voice and remember the lessons she taught us.
We will be forever thankful to all who held mom in your thoughts and prayers. To our ever faithful and loving mother, rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ouachita County Medical Center Hospice. Visitation will be Wednesday 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Benton Funeral Home with Rev. Lance Hollis and Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Fordyce.
