Calhoun County Recognized as StormReady by NOAA

Calhoun County became recognized as StormReady on September 14, 2023, by working with the National Weather Service Office in Little Rock. Calhoun County completed the necessary requirements, which were created to help community leaders and emergency managers better prepare and respond to hazardous weather impacting the citizens of Calhoun County by ensuring that they have multiple ways to receive and disseminate hazardous weather information. The hard work that Donna Steelman, Calhoun County’s OEM Director, put into getting Calhoun County StormReady has the county certified through 2027.

Calhoun County became recognized as StormReady on September 14, 2023, by working with the National Weather Service Office in Little Rock. The National Weather Service recognized Calhoun County as a StormReady county during a brief ceremony at the Calhoun County Courthouse located at 309 West Main St. in Hampton at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2023. The National Weather Service in Little Rock presented Calhoun County officials with a certificate and a StormReady reflective sign, honoring their hard work and dedication ensuring that the residents of Calhoun County are prepared for the impacts of severe weather.

Becoming StormReady is an important step in helping the residents of Arkansans prepare for the next dangerous weather event. 'We can't do anything to prevent dangerous storms from happening, but we can work together to prepare for hazardous weather, and to communicate in one voice to everyone in harm's way when these storms approach. Donna and her team have done a tremendous job in working with the Weather Service to help ensure the residents of Calhoun County are Storm Ready', said Dennis Cavanaugh, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
