This year's Primary Election may not seem important to some since Biden is the obvious democrat candidate and Trump most likely the republican candidate. However, on the Calhoun County ballot will be a lasting decision to be determined.
It seems convoluted to the average voter but the tax issue that will be on the ballot is simply to be able to build a roof over the Calco arena and bleachers. It will not be a totally enclosed arena, just covered to be able to have events during raining days.
There will be two (2) issues concerning (sales) taxes that will increase the current rate. One will be a permanent and the other will expire after the building is paid off. To fully fund the project both taxes need to pass.
The judge has wanted to put a roof over the arena for several years, trying to solicit funds from area businesses and persons but received no takers. He feels like that community can benefit from it and decide to proceed with allowing the voters to decide. The quorum court was divided on putting it on the ballot.
There will be a town hall meeting, Monday, January 29, on the benefits of having a roof over the arena. I am sure there will be some for it and opposed. The meeting will help voters decide as well as an opportunity to voice their own questions concerning 3+ million dollar project.
The March 5 election will decide if our sales tax in Calhoun County will increase. If the both increases pass, only two counties will have a higher (county) sales tax rate than Calhoun. Currently, the county is 2.5%. Total sales tax is 9.5% (State, City, County.)
