Hampton School District hosted a public town hall meeting to discuss the options for the 20242025 school year calendar. The two calendar options are four-day a week calendar or an alternative calendar.
Hampton Superintendent Matt Scarbrough spoke before the community about the calendar.
Superintendent Scarbrough said they are trying to solve some problems by changing the calendar. One of the issues include teacher burnout. They are looking to reduce absenteeism of students, faculty, and staff. They also hope it will help with the reduction of learning loss, he says, which happens every year with the current calendar. They are also hoping to slow down the decline of enrollment and allow a more flexible schedule.
'These are the problems that we identified that we are trying to solve,' said Superintendent Scarbrough. 'I don't know that we're going to solve 100 percent of these problems just by rearranging our calendar. What our hope is that we solve some of or all of these problems.'
Superintendent Scarbrough presented different statistics for an alternative schedule.
Superintendent Scarbrough said both the four-day a week calendar and the alternative calendar has some great pieces in it. He said there's always good and bad in anything.
The superintendent heard from members of the community.
