Public Discusses Taxes, Rodeo Arena at Town Hall

The County hosted a town hall meeting Monday night led by Calhoun County Judge Floyd Nutt at the Calhoun County Courthouse. The meeting was for the public to discuss the two taxes that will be on the ballot March 5. The total tax would be a half cent.

Judge Nutt emphasized the taxes would benefit all parks in Calhoun County. He said their first focus would be to putting a top at the rodeo arena.

'I have exhausted all efforts to getting this done in my 21 years as county judge,' said Judge Nutt.

He told the public he believes the county can raise $500,000 along with the tax money to go to paying off the debt for the arena roof.

'I'm going to work hard to get it paid faster,' said Judge Nutt.

The 3/8 cent tax will go to pay for the arena roof bonds. Judge Nutt also believes they can get grants to help fund the roof.

Once the debt is paid off the 3/8 cent tax will expire. The permanent 1/8 cent will go to help fund the operation and maintenance of all the county parks.

There was discussion about the tax increase for the arena roof and the possibility of having more events because of it being covered. It was mentioned that the rodeo expenses have recently exceeded revenues blaming weather related issues.

The next town hall meeting on the issue will be held February 15.
