This year’s Primary Election may not seem important to some since Biden is the obvious democrat candidate and Trump most likely the republican candidate. However, on the Calhoun County ballot will be a lasting decision to be determined.

Johnny Ray Peebles, 68 of Thornton died Friday January 19, 2024 at his home. Born July 25, 1955 at Crossett, he was a son of the late James Carl Russell Winston Peebles and Ella Juanita Bays Peebles. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rhonda Renee Peebles; a son, Johnny Carl Peebles; and a sister, Helen Irene Hallman.

Tax Town Hall Meeting Monday on Tax Issues— March 5 Ballot

The Judge will be hosting a town hall meeting in the Calhoun County Courthouse. It is an opportunity to ask questions about the tax issues that will be on the ballot, March 5. The taxes will be used primarily for building a roof over the CalCo Arena. There will be a two taxes on the ballot. One tax will be used to pay for the building of the arena roof. One tax will be permanent and will help provide funds for the parks and recreation.

Friday morning Calhoun County awoke to storms just before dawn. The fierce winds (70-90 mph) took out several 100 year old trees including one on the courthouse square (pictured at right.) An old pecan tree between buildings north of Main Street (center right) no longer will be providing pecans and Mrs. Goolsby slept through the one falling on her house (bottom right.) News media across the state made mention of the damage and the volunteer help in Calhoun County.
